Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Depending on your outlook, you might answer the following question differently: How do you feel about Mondays?
Pessimists cringe at the idea. Mondays suck. They mean back to work, back to the grind, back to slaving away for holidays and freedom and weekends. Optimists might see Mondays in the opposite light: they signify an opportunity.
In the entrepreneurial world, almost every day can be a Monday. When you eat, sleep and breathe your work, traditional weekends don’t come by the same way. Regardless, whether or not your “Monday” is actually on a Monday, I’m sure you can relate to the thought “darn, it’s Monday”.
What if I told you that your perspective can change? There has been lots of research about rewiring the automatic thoughts in our mind. Like fairy lights, when we think particular thoughts we light up familiar channels in our brain. The more we think about these thoughts, the stronger the lights shine. In other words, the more we focus on a particular thought, positive or negative, the more it becomes engrained in our minds.
This is why it’s important to focus on the positive – not just in one aspect of your life, but in general by showing gratitude, appreciation, and adopting an optimistic view of the world.
Let’s take this a step further and truly appreciate the amazingness of a Monday.
Mondays are a new beginning. They give you the opportunity to start fresh. Tackle that new project. Finish that looming deadline. Focus on a project that’s fallen to the side. They are an opportunity to start over and kick some serious butt. They give you a chance to follow your purpose.
Mondays allow us to rebalance. You had a great weekend, right? Don’t you wish it could last forever? Me too. But realistically, all areas of our lives need balance. To truly enjoy the rest, we need to work hard. We need Mondays to provide us with the structure, organization and discipline to shift gears and get stuff done. Did you hear that? We need Mondays.
Mondays give you energy. After a weekend of rest and relaxation (if you’re lucky!), you are properly energized to take on a Monday. Mondays do give you the energy and strength to do your very best work. Fresh off the weekend, you have more energy on a Monday than you do any other day of the week. Use this energy to your advantage!
Alright, let’s rewire those brains to truly believe that Mondays are awesome! Every Monday morning, give yourself 5-10 minutes in a quiet space. Instead of thinking that “monday’s are the worst days ever”, allow yourself to feel energized, motivated and ready to take on the week in front of you. Remind yourself that Monday is as good a day as any, and to enjoy the day ahead.
While I fully believe that we can rewire our thoughts and truly appreciate Mondays, this perspective can be a hard one to practice – heck, everyone hates Mondays, right? And it’s true that some Mondays are much harder than the rest of the week. But the more and more you practice this positive attitude towards Monday, the more you will be rewarded with the gift of Monday.
